Subject:Both of them!
Time:11:18 am.
Lots of movie watching this weekend from all areas of the film spectrum.

2046 - Highly anticipated sequel to In The Mood For Love. Ultimately just a beautiful mess of a film for Ziyi Zhang and the DP to show off in. More messy than beautiful, completely disappointing.

Flaming Creatures - Jack Smith's experimental, gay magnum opus shot on cheap or discarded film and showing every bit of its age in a disappointing print at Anthology Film Archives. I had wanted to see the film for a long time and was not let down. It's still technically banned in the United States so it was an adventure seeing it as well. Then again... nobody cares... except Strom Thurmann who was an outspoken critic of the film back in the 70s. He was probably rolling over in his grave repeatedly while myself and the rest of the audience were being scandalized by a brilliant-grainy sometimes and washed out others (but always to the point where you can hardly tell what's happening)-black and white pseudo-arabian orgy. Would like to see a better print sometime... was not disappointed. Terrible date movie though.

Sin City -  Never read the graphic novels but enjoyed the film thoroughly. By my count, Lee and I were able to guess six or seven key plot twists or lines of dialogue (word for word) but that didn't detract from the experience at all. In fact, it was kind of nice because everything went in the direction we guessed (and hoped) it would. The visuals were much less gimmicky than I thought they would be and the hard boiled writing was perfectly coupled with completely straight faced performances from all the actors. A visual feast! No... that's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Day After Tomorrow - Watched half of it on TV. Cheesy but enjoyable. Dennis Quaid is a stud.

First day of classes today.

Will write more later.

Subject:NYMPHO PEE PEE TEENS HAVE MORTGAGED IT ALL TO UPDATE THEIR PAYPAL ACCOUNT SETTINGS!
Time:9:58 am.
Updating from work today.

This is my second to last full week of work. After next week, I'll be doing 18 hours a week since school is starting. My schedule this semester involves some directing courses some art history courses and painting. It should be a fairly relaxing and enjoyable semester.

On September 25th, as part of the New Yorker festival, David Denby is going to be screening "The Third Man" then talking about it afterwards. He's no Pauline Kael but I still think he's a great film critic.

The New York Film Festival is going to be showing "The President's Last Bang" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," both films that I'm dying to see. Ticket's go on sale September 10th. It's probably a good idea to get on those with hella quickness.

I don't know if I've already said it here but I've found a cart that has better chicken and rice than 53rd & 6th. I've done extensive comparing this summer and it's undeniable: Kwik Meal is the new cart king.

I've started learning xhtml, php, and javascript. I figure they're good skills to have. I've also poked around with mySQL but that shit be crazy.

BZEEP!

Subject:GONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Time:12:26 am.
Music:Sigur Ros - Gong.
It's been awhile since I've written in here. Not so much because I've been busy (I haven't been any busier than I have been all summer) but just because I feel like there hasn't been much to write about. Even now there's not much to write about, I just feel like I should since it's been so long.

Work is going fine. I'm staying there even after school starts and will be getting a significant raise at that time as well. Thanks to work I'm also discovering many new cheap and delicious places to eat. Most notably, Dumpling House where you can get five of the best dumplings I've ever had for a buck and Nicky's Vietnamese Deli where they have really good Banh Mi sandwiches. Mmm.

Lee and I took an overnight trip to visit her cousin at Brown in Rhode Island. Providence is a pleasant town but a little too small for my tastes. I hated beaches but we went to one. I guess they're not so bad... I had fun.

I saw Werner Herzog's latest film "Grizzly Man" yesterday. It's probably one of my more favorite films of his. It's been awhile since a film has stuck in my head to the degree that this film did. A lot to mull over and digest. The character he chose to document is incredibly interesting and Werner makes some really interesting choices in the way he put the film together. I'd definitely like to see it again. It comes out this Friday so check it out if it's playing near you.

I recently also saw Herzog's "Land of Silence and Darkness" which is an incredibly beautiful film. The last shot of the film is really heartbreaking and can't be described to do it justice. You need to experience everything in the film leading up to that shot to fully understand the significance of the seemingly simple actions performed in the end. Super highly recommended.

Jean Luc Godard's "Tout Va B!en" is another great film that I saw awhile back.

"2046" is out, I really need to go see that.

Wondering what all the hoopla is about, I read the first Harry Potter book recently. I enjoyed it. Very entertaining. I was really disappointed in the first half of the last chapter though. I felt like the author didn't talk down to children and treat them like kids until the very end when she started explaining everything as if we were watching the last five minutes of a Scooby Doo episode. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book a lot and am starting the second one now.

The song Gong off the upcoming Sigur Ros album Takk is quite good.

I've been listening to lots of Mountain Goats lately. I don't know if I've said that in an earlier post but I've been listening to them obsessively. I got tickets to see them in October. :)

Work tomorrow. Bedtime now.

Subject:P.H.D., playa hatas degree. Ah ha ha
Time:11:27 pm.
Mood: full.
Music:Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
OMG, the second to last episode of season five of the Sopranos was brilliant. One of the best episodes of the show ever. Everything that I thought was going to happen in the season finale happened in this episode. That had me worried about whether the finale would be any good but I wasn't let down with that episode either. Such a good show and now I have to wait until March to see a new episode...

I watched another installment of the UP series. Lee and I watched 28 Up yesterday and 35 Up and 42 Up should arrive soon. The series just continues to amaze. 28 Up was both exciting and scary to watch since the last time I had seen anything about the subjects was when they were my age! Almost all of them were now married with multiple kids and had real jobs... I guess they're a product of a different generation (one that married and settled down earlier) but it's scary! Almost being 22 and expecting to attend the wedding of two of my friends next summer isn't helping any either...

Finally went to Yankee stadium. It was one of the things I wanted to do most when I was first coming to New York and it took three years to get around to it. Wtf? The stadium is pretty magical and the game was a mixed bag of emotions. Seeing Luis Sojo, Derek Jeter, Arthur Rhodes, and Randy Johnson was pretty sweet. A-Rod and Jason Giambi also being there was upsetting but not so upsetting that I couldn't enjoy the game.

So far having a full time job isn't so bad. Eight hour days feel more like four and I get paid by the week instead of by the hour which is neat. The one problem is that I don't get my first paycheck until the 22nd and since my Pfizer stint ended awhile ago I'm temporarily in a financial squeeze. But thing could be way worse than they are since I really have very little to complain about. My first summer in the city has been enjoyable.

Even the weather is nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be although I've decided that the weather in New York is worse than Seattle and it has nothing to do with heat, it actually has to do with precipitation. The thing Seattle has against it is that it has more days of rain than New York. Otherwise, the winters in New York are miserable, New York has warm rain (one of my top ten least favorite things), it rains more in New York in terms of YTD totals, and when it rains in New York it's the really heavy coming in sideways and getting the lower half of your pants wet when you use an umbrella kind.

I prefer the air smelling fresh and cool after a rainstorm instead of feeling like you're in a disgusting sauna full of evaporating rain, dog pee, and mysterious sewer steam. On the other hand, I'm coming to terms with the sun. I still hate its brightness but I'm beginning to find comfort in its warmth. Today was really nice and fireflies are still pretty magical. Yankee stadium full of fireflies would've been hella sweet.

Subject:Another relaxing Rye weekend.
Time:11:25 pm.
Aside from spending lots of quality time with Lee I watched two episodes of the Sopranos, Batman Begins, 7 Up, 7 Plus Seven, 21 Up, and a Mets game.

I'll start from the beginning.

The Sopranos is a brilliant show. I went through a period where I thought Twin Peaks was the best show ever, but everytime I watch the Sopranos I'm just more and more amazed. It's like a 50 hour long movie that I don't want to end. The writing is original, the characters are all well developed and interesting and it's just such an intelligent show. It's nice not being treated like an idiot when watching T.V. The last season begins March 2006 and I'm very very excited.

Batman Begins was very entertaining and I liked it a lot. Unfortunately, it was very obviously not Christopher Nolan's film but a franchise that Warner Brothers is very carefully protecting and were kind enough to let Christopher Nolan attach his name to. The fast cutting and rushed ending were disappointing but the dark bladerunneresque atmosphere was great. Christian Bale is a great Batman, Michael Caine was great as Alfred, and I really really really liked the guy who played Bruce Wayne's dad. I don't know why... I just did.

Katie Holmes didn't ruin the movie although her inane profundities grew tiresome after awhile. Actually, they were tired from the beginning. Also, Gary Oldman was fine as Commisioner Gordon but I'm so used to him in The Professional and Die Hard that I keep expecting him to shoot Batman in the back of the head.

Liam Neeson is so cool. The same goes for ninjas.

The Up series is a series of TV specials that tracked the lives of various children in the UK starting at the age of seven and revisiting them in seven year intervals. A lot of them are annoying but it's surprising to see the way kids change and even more suprising to see just how little they change. The series is up to 42 up now and 49 up is due next year. Maybe I'll write more once I've seen the whole series.

On Saturday I went to the Mets game where we had great seats thanks to Lee's dad. More importantly, it was Carlos Beltran bobblehead day and Kobayashi, the world's competitive eating champion, threw out the first pitch. You guys might recognize him from the food network or his recent succesful defense of his title on ESPN2. I merely recognize him as the world's greatest living athlete.

I recently saw fireflies for the first time in my life. It was in City Hall Park where they have lots of art installations and I thought the lights were an art installation. A brilliant one at that. I stared for awhile trying to figure out how the artist had done it and being really excited because it was so beautiful. Then, I took a closer look and realized they were insects! That made it even more exciting and gave me fuzzy feelings toward nature that I suspect Leonard would have been proud of.

Last night I ate four brownies, a slice of peach pie, two or three cookies, and some ice cream. I went to bed feeling satisfied with what felt like my imminent sugar induced death.

Tempurpedic pillows are amazing.

Work is going well. James' sister looks exactly like him for anybody wondering.

Speaking of work, I need to update my resume now.

Subject:Barnes and Noble!
Time:12:15 am.
Today I had my farewell lunch with my boss from Pfizer and my other sort of boss. We went to a sushi place and it was very very good. Possibly second only to Nobu.

It was sad but I'm excited to be starting something new on Monday (read: I got the American Express job).

They were also very very nice and got me a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Coupled with a buy 2 get a 3rd free deal, I walked home with the following:

Subject:Last day...
Time:12:53 pm.
It's my last day here at Pfizer. Possibly forever. My boss informed me that his boss gave him a "hell no" when asked about rehiring me this year. Oh well. If they hire an intern for 2006 I will most likely be back.

My interview with American Express is tomorrow and hopefully that works out. As much as I enjoy sitting around and playing games and watching movies, it doesn't pay the rent :(

The past weekend was spent in Rye. I often miss the suburbs when I've been in the city for too long so it's always nice to go up there. Grass is always interesting to walk on when you haven't for months and at night it gets so quiet (at least relative to the city) that it makes my ears feel weird. Eating pretty much nothing but coffee cake and cookies all weekend doesn't hurt either...

I watched Serpico which was good. Al Pacino got hella pissed and broke a chair while yelling "He's a cop killer!" That part was great and the rest of the film was generally enjoyable. Frank Serpico was an all right guy and one of the lawyers Lee is working with was involved in that case. Interesting, no?

Last night I watched Jersey Girl and was surprised by how not awful it was. It was really cheesy and pretty dumb but I actually found it entertaining and watched the whole thing. If you feel compelled to watch it, I recommend you watch it the way I did: come into the movie 15 minutes late so that Jennifer Lopez is already dead.

Subject:Second to last day at Pfizer.
Time:11:26 am.
I've been at work for an hour and seven minutes now. I have two or three left today and then three or four on Monday. After that, I'm having sushi with my bosses on Thursday and then it's over. My boss is trying to get his boss to approve an extension for me but he's not sure if it's going to work out.

I have an interview with the publishing department at American Express (I didn't even know one existed until recently) on Tuesday. Hopefully that works out and I'll spend the rest of my summer working on Food and Wine Magazine's website. My boss at Pfizer is considering bringing me back in the fall if he does get the extension approved. That would be perfect. I could work at Amex all summer then go back to Pfizer in the fall. Of course all that working just goes straight towards paying my rent... *sigh*

The internet at our apartment is hella slow and hella whack. I even e-mailed them and complained. They said they were "working on it."

I suspect that next week I will be enjoying my first days of unemployment. Hopefully it won't last too long...

In other news. I watched Powell and Pressburger's "The Red Shoes." It's a little cheesy at times but overall a really really great film. Michael Powell is the director of "Peeping Tom" and although this movie is very different I think I might've liked it better. But, "Peeping Tom" is a pretty bad ass movie.

"Serpico" and "Notre Musique" are now on their way to my apartment. I love Netflix.

Time:11:42 am.
Mood: sleepy.
Music:My printer humming really loudly.
Well, I've just made about $30 off of Pfizer sitting here and accomplishing nothing. As much as I honestly enjoy this job and as much as I think "Office Space" is a horribly overrated movie (minus the printer smashing scene), I'm starting to realize that the movie had some things going for it.

Maybe it's because of the guy in the neighboring cubicle who looks at girls on myspace all day inbetween reading tips on bodybuilding websites while downing protein shakes from his nalgene (This is when he's not calling his dad, who's a bigwig in the company, and complaining about having nothing to do).

I haven't been much better though. I spend half my day here at work looking at computer parts on zipzoomfly and then reading about them on cnet.

To my credit, I also spend a lot of my time reading the news and I just have to say that John Bolton gives me a sick feeling in my stomach whenever I see him. He looks like the evil twin of my highschool history teacher and to think that he could be working in the UN right down the street from me...

In other news:

Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle was very disappointing. It had its moments. The animation on the castle while it moves around was great and Miyazaki has an imagination that's just incredible. BUT, the movie... to put it lightly... sucked balls. Okay, maybe that's a bit too much... but it wasn't very good. Princess Mononoke is still brilliant though.

The Incredibles on the other hand was hilarious and I loved it. I think the Toy Story movies are still better but this was probably better than Finding Nemo and definitely way better than Monsters Inc.

Time to actually accomplish something. I hope.

edit:

Something I just learned from a man on the elevator responding to a woman raving about the popcorn in the Pfizer cafeteria: "Snack foods, you can't stop with just one." Genius.

Okay... you had to be there. The guy said it as if he were the first to ever realize this and he thought he was so cool. He even inserted a dramatic pause after "Snack foods," I mean c'mon.

Time:2:10 pm.
Mood: relieved.
Music:Uh... Pfizer office noises....
As promised, I'm at work looking at jobs on craigslist. I've applied to two so far today and will probably apply to a couple more later today.

I get off work in about an hour.

Today, NYU is showing the latest Miyazaki film, "Howl's Moving Castle" so I'm going to go see that and maybe play some Monopoly afterwards.

I saw the footage from Tom Cruise's now infamous interview on Oprah and it was really disturbing. I'm a fan of Mr. Cruise and I think he's a decent actor who has done some interesting stuff. Because I read the news on internet movie database everyday, I'm pretty in touch and up to date with my pop culture. Lately, there's a been a lot of hoopla over Tom Cruise's relationship with Katie Holmes and I thought it was weird but not that big of a deal. Then I saw this video... Tom Cruise is completely insane and somebody needs to find him some help (help not affiliated with scientology). Then again. I guess him losing his mind was to be expected after he and Nicole Kidman got seperated...

Elsewhere in the world, it is hot as balls outside today. Humid as balls too. Some might say I'm being overzealous with my use of "as balls" but if you were walking around today in a dress shirt and khaki's you'd understand. The sun was shining in my eyes too. Damn sun.

I feel naked when I walk to work without anything so I take my bag. I put my iPod in it so that I can tell myself I'm carrying the bag for reasons other than my feeling of nakedness but deep down I know the truth. Feel free to harass me if you ever see me going to work with my bag because there's nothing in it except for my iPod... and maybe a jacket or umbrella if it's cloudy...

That's as honest and revealing as this livejournal gets. It's one of my deepest darkest secrets, the likes of which will never be revealed again. I'm spent.

Time:12:23 am.
Things have been going quite well lately. I'm no longer allergic to my apartment and I've spent a lot of time with Lee.

I do still need to find a job. I've applied to an average of two or three a day but so far nothing...

Batman Begins next Wednesday will mark the first time I pay to see a movie in a theater since... I dunno... a really really long time ago. Winter? I think so...

War of the Worlds comes out soon too...

The new computer is running well and editing video on it is SO much better than on my laptop. I think I'm going to install Linux on my laptop just so I can say I use Linux. There are still a few issues I need to work out with the computer (mainly the fact that there's no soundcard or speakers) but other than that it's pretty sweet.

The weather here in New York is pretty damn hot. I've decided that it's not really the heat that I can't stand, it's the brightness of the sun. I hate having the sun shining in my eyes. The humidity here is pretty nasty too. And summer hasn't even started yet... damn.

In my attempt to cook more often I've so far made Kalbi, Bulgogi, and Seasame Noodles. I've made spaghetti a bunch of times too but that doesn't really count. My two main goals for the summer are Panang Curry and Pad Thai.

I'm really sleepy. I need to go to bed now so that I can go to work tomorrow and sit at my computer and apply for new jobs while at my current job.

Subject:Une Femme Est Une Femme
Time:5:46 pm.
I've nearly hit level 42 for those of you keeping track.

Yesterday, I watched "3-Iron" again and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. I was planning on doing something else while James, Kate, and Kate's friend Tim watched it but then i got sucked in. Oh well.

After not having purchased a DVD for a very very very long time, I got the criterion edition DVDs of "Hoop Dreams" and "Burden of Dreams."

One of the special features on "Burden of Dreams" is the documentary "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe." The short documentary is the result of a bet that Werner Herzog lost. He had bet Errol Morris that Morris would never complete a feature film or that he'd eat his shoe. Morris went out and made "Gates of Heaven" and Herzog ate his shoe. The documentary is quite funny but manage to be more than just that. "Burden of Dreams" is Les Blank's film about the making of "Fitzcaraldo," I'm going to rewatch Fitzcaraldo before I watch it.

Godard's "A Woman is a Woman" was more playful than anything else. The film incorprated lots of clever uses of cinematic techniques and had a very strong sense of self consciousness throughout. It's an earlier Godard film and while enjoyable it didn't impress me to the degree that so many of his other works have.

Anyway, back to yesterday.

For some reason James, Kate, Leonard, Tim, and I decided to go to Grimaldi's, a pizza place right across the bridge in Brooklyn. Typically, this wouldn't be that big of a deal. The pizza is brilliant and well worth the short walk across the bridge. Unfortunately, it was raining yesterday and we walked there with no umbrellas or jackets and arrived soaked. It was one of the stupidest things I've done since living here but also very rewarding because Grimaldi's was especially on top of their game yesterday and might have produced the finest pizza I've ever eaten.

That just made me really hungry.

Subject:apt
Time:8:24 pm.
I'm finally settled in my new apartment. Vadim has gone home for the weekend so I have the place all to myself for a couple days. I would take advantage of that but I don't know how to go about doing that beyond walking around the apartment naked.

Moving in was a real pain in the ass. We rented a truck in Connecticut and went to the Ikea there and bought a lot of matching furniture. Vadim and I both have the same bed and desks. It's awfully cute. After loading tons of Ikea furniture into a truck we drove into the city with his dad. Very slowly. We were heading into the city during rush hour in what probably looked like a clown car. The only truck with three seats at U-Haul was a tony little Toyota pickup truck that could barely exceed speeds of 55 miles per hour. Downhill!

Okay, that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but only a little bit.

Once in Manhattan, we had to stop at our dorms to pick up all our crap. We eventually arrived at the apartment around 9pm after starting the day at 7am. Luckily, James showed up to help move stuff in and we were done by about 11:30. It was a long long day.

The following day was spent putting together furniture as the cardboard boxes and wooden parts sucked all the moisture out of our poor hands. It felt weird to touch anything for the next couple days.

That was all over a week ago.

The past week was spent with my mom eating lots of Korean food and visiting all the restaurants I love to eat at but can't visit too often for financial reasons. In between meals we shopped for household goods that I need but would never go out of my way to purchase myself (my most cherished purchase being a waffle maker).

On Thursday night we watched "The Phantom of the Opera" which was painfully cheesy but still enjoyable. Afterwards, we saw Nancy Reagen outside leaving "Spamalot" and I watched in amazement as people screamed her name and cheered. I must've missed something...

Hank Azaria and Tim Curry who were hanging out around the corner from her were much more noteworthy sightings.

Yesterday, after my mom left, I watched "Kinsey" which was very entertaining albeit a bit disappointing. It felt too short and all the characters felt underdeveloped. That's probably the result of trying to cram a persons entire life into a two hour film. Had it been my life the film had been about, they could have just done a series of dissolves of me on a computer aging with each dissolve.

Oh yeah, for the first week in the new apartment, I was allergic to it! I'm doing much better now but I think all the dust that was a result of all the furniture being put together and all the boxes being thrown around really wreaked some havoc on my eyeballs. Being allergic to your own home is really sad.

I've also hit level 40 on World of Warcraft and have finally recieved my mount, if anybody cares... no? I didn't think so...

I'm going to go watch "A Woman is a Woman" now. A silly title if you ask me... I could've told you that.
